Rudraprayag is a small town and municipality in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state. This place has its name from the name of Hindu God Lord Shiva (Rudra) and one of the Panch Prayag (five confluences) of Alaknanda River, the point of confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. Alaknanda then proceeds towards Devaprayag where it joins with Bhagirathi River to form the river Ganges.
This sacred place is situated on the holy confluence of two sacred rivers in Uttarakhand which are Alakananda and Mandakini river. It is 34 km away from Srinagar of Garhwal. It is nestled at a height of 2,936 ft. above sea level. From this sacred place, there are two separate routes for the two popular and holy destinations of Uttarakhand which are Badrinath and Kedarnath. This place has natural beauty, religious importance, glaciers and lakes.
According to some legends, this is the place where the famous Narad Muni who is a mythological character did penance here to appease Hindu God Shiva for learning and mastering the art of music. The Hindu Lord Shiva acknowledge this and blessed Nara Muni in his Rudra avatar. That’s why this place is considered as a sacred destination in Uttarakhand where many tourists visits and pilgrims commencing the Char Dham Yatra.
Kedarnath is located 86 km from Rudraprayag most of the pilgrims take halt here during their char dham yatra.
From Rudraprayag on can go to Badrinath by taking chamoli–Joshimath road.
