Hanuman Chatti Travel Guide (Char Dham)

The Hanuman Chatti lies near the confluence of two rivers, Yamuna and Hanuman Ganga. Numerous shrines are situated around Hanuman Chatti, which is also a popular trekking site. The word "chatti" used to be a night halting place for pilgrims.

The most noteworthy amongst the temples is the one dedicated to Hanuman. It is not a very towering structure and is about 6 feet tall. One of the most striking features of this Hanuman temple that you should definitely take note of on your Tour to Hanuman Chatti is the overlapping courses of stone that has resulted in the entire formation. Within the interiors of the temple there is an impressive image of Lord Hanuman carrying a mountain.

To the left of the temple there is a Samadhi or burial shrine. It is that of Himalaya Giri, a saint who lived and meditated in Hanuman Chatti. Hindus generally cremate their dead; however this trend is not followed in case of ascetics who are believed to have shed their worldly ties long ago and consequently not subject to what is mean for the commoners. On top of the shrine there is a Shiva Linga. The obvious implication is that the people revere the saint as Lord Shiva himself.

Mythology / Importance Of Hanuman Chatti

According to some legends, Draupadi and Pandavas were wondering in the Himalayas during their exile period, a lotus flower slipped into Draupadi’s hands. After seeing the flowers beauty Draupadi requested Bheem to bring more Lotuses for her. Bheem was always wanted to see his wife happy, he went many places but fail to find the lotuses. Then he decided to take the trail where an old monkey was lying with his tail obstructing the path. Bhima asked the monkey to move his tail, but the monkey said, he was too old and tired to give him the way, so he can lift his tail and place it on the other side if he wants to move forward.

Bheem tried many attempts but failed to move the tail of that old moneky. On failing miserably, Bhima was left in awe of the strength of the monkey’s tail and realized that it was not an ordinary monkey. Bhima then requested the monkey to reveal his true self. After noticing that Bhima’s arrogance had succumbed, the monkey said, “I am Hanuman, son of the Wind, your elder brother”. Then Bhima realized his mistake and sought forgiveness from Hanuman. Lord Hanuman accepted his apology, give blessings on his brother and told him the way to Kubera’s garden, where he could find the flower. Hence, the place was named Hanumanchatti in honor of the Lord Hanuman.
